Computer credit card readers are these days used as a replacement to the traditional card readers as a means of simplifying the kind of hardware used. Usually you'd resort either to a very special device or use an electronic gadget that would be hooked up to a register like machine that was kept alive uniquely for such purchase.

You'll most likely be able to use that that you'd use with your mobile phone or other Bluetooth devices.
The advantages on these systems is clear, since it's faster, more efficient, doesn't require special hardware to function and can be used in a number of ways. In some cases you don't even need a separate hardware piece as you can just get a keyboard credit card reader and it'll save you space on a desk. But of course, there is still one small disadvantage to this system.
Inevitably you'll need a secure connection to the network which will have to be setup by professionals and at a cost. The kind of data involved in these credit card transfers is particularly sensitive and therefore it can't be left vulnerable to prying ears, so an encrypted connection is required, which you are usually forced to pay a fee for in order to not only install, but make constant use for.
